Early morning January 2009 in a carriage on the Underground. Strangers fall into uneasy, hesitant conversation where they only hint at their troubles. But through the vehicle of song we find out what really makes them tick.
This summer the Fringe will make history (again!) as being the biggest arts festival ever, but it’s not just the Fringe that’s toasting success, Greenside is breaking records too!
Fringe 2011 is set to be Greenside’s BIGGEST and BEST yet.
This year, we’re proud to be launching our brand new space: Studio 2, a purpose built black box studio space, seating fifty. As well as the space improvements, we have DOUBLED the number of events at Greenside compared to 2010; that’s over two hundred performances over the course of the Fringe!
‘Beside The Greenside’ is back for a second year and is brings with it quite simply the most unique and innovate space at the Fringe: ‘The Shack’!
At Greenside, we love our outdoor gardens and so do our audience members so good news: we have upgraded and increased our outdoor areas just for you! We know that the Fringe can be stressful so take the weight off your feet and let our trained therapist take away all your woes; offering fantastic treatments and massages for the whole of the Fringe! Throw in a completely upgraded outdoor lighting rig, green room and backstage area and you can see why we’re so excited.
We simply can’t wait to share Fringe 2011 with you, and what a Programme we have… so take a look at our ‘What’s On’ section to marvel at the gems that we have on offer.
We at Greenside truly believe that we encapsulate the spirit of the Fringe, so come down and have look for yourself try something new… it is the Fringe after all!
Performing_at_Greenside
At Greenside, we offer an unrivalled experience to all our companies; the reason why we understand the complexity of performing at the Fringe is because we have actually performed at the Fringe!
We started our Fringe life in exactly the same position as you, as Performers, Directors and Production Managers. We believe that it’s this unique perspective on the Fringe that allows us to understand the fantastic journey you’re about to start! We believe that every company should have the opportunity to perform at the biggest arts festival in the world, and that’s why we don’t operate a strict application process in which we only program the most experienced and well known acts. We believe that irrespective of reputation, experience or size there is a place for you at Greenside.
We know that you want a fantastic space, with a generous size stage, fantastic technical capabilities, and friendly staff that will allow you to showcase your work, so we work tirelessly to ensure we tick all of those boxes and provide you with the Fringe Venue you deserve. At Greenside, we guarantee to NEVER charge a Box Office Split, which means that every penny you take on the box office is yours to keep!
We are on hand twenty four hours a day, seven days a week before, during and after the Fringe to help you with all your queries from Press Releases, Lighting Designs, Marketing Advise and even where to find the best bar in Edinburgh!
We know finding the right venue is the first step in your Fringe adventure and we’re sure that one of our spaces is right for you.
Please click the link below to find out more about Greenside Theatre and Greenside Studio.
Without the Companies who perform at Greenside there would be no Greenside and we really appreciate each and every company that has performed with us over the past seven years. We like to think we have a fantastic Venue with unbeatable service but don’t just take our word for it! See what companies who have worked with us in the past have to say about their time at Greenside.
The
only criticism we have of Greenside is the fact that they were just
too popular to have us in our first year at the Fringe, when we were
pipped to the post by another company, and had to suffer at the hands
of more a unscrupulous venue. We forgave Darren, Tara and the team
though, the instant we stepped into Greenside in our second year at the
Fringe . . . and have never looked back . . . in fact, we liked them
so much our company technical manager joined their team!! I defy any
venue or venue team
to be more welcoming and flexible when faced with a cast of 20,
very energetic, young people, a live band, and a technically
demanding show. With a great backstage area as well as
performance space, toasties so good that they became an integral
part of our cast promo on the mile, and a passion for delivering
a Fringe experience to remember, (for all the right reasons),
you really couldn’t expect more from a venue! Three years on
Greenside has become our second home, and we would highly
recommend you come and join the team for a brilliant festival!
Cathy Moss – Projects Director – Indigo arts
' Louche Theatre's 2010 visit to the
Edinburgh Fringe was a great experience , a major factor in making it so
enjoyable was the venue and staff there. From the first moment we
contacted them, Greenside people went out of their way to ensure
everything went smoothly....nothing was too much trouble ! The
venue itself is delightful, situated on the edge of parkland, the
performance areas are an excellent size and there is a good space
to store props etc. To top it all off, we came away
having been nominated for 6 company and individual awards ! Needless to
say, we have already booked Greenside for the 2011 Fringe.........oh,
forgot to say, the food is yummy too ! '
Harry Durnall
Artistic Director
Louche Theatre

Greenside is a smashing venue: while it has seating for 100, it feels intimate, and the major improvements in the last three years make it a pleasure to perform in. Darren and Tara and the team could not be more welcoming or accommodating, and professional help is well provided. The fact that Greenside is a ten minute stroll from the Royal Mile has never been a bar to us getting Sell-Out Status for 8 years now. We warmly recommend Greenside to any company wanting to enhance their reputation at the Fringe.
Lloyd Allington
Director of Drama
Close Up Theatre
How would I sum up my Greenside experience? In a word: Excellent. The crew are of the utmost in professionalism and experience. As for the space itself it was hands down one of the nicest spaces I encountered in all of my fringing. The lights and sound were wonderful and once again the crew was absolutely top notch. Anyone who chooses this as their venue will not regret it!
They say a picture speaks a thousand words, take a look at Greenside below;

Attempts On Her Life

Martin Crimp’s rarely staged yet most iconic play Attempts on her Life comes to the Edinburgh Fringe 2011. Performed in its entirety we witness 17 scenarios, 17 obsessions and 17 attempts to describe one indefinable character. With no central plot, no central character and no other definable characters, we witness an experiment attempting to create the perfect answers to modern society. 17 scenarios for the theatre for ‘a world in which theatre itself has died’.

The Cagebirds were happy ignoring each other, until The Wild One came. The Wild One has a lot to say. Being caged in, as the others are, can't be right, it can't be fair. The Cagebirds have a lot to say too. The Great Guzzler loves to talk about food, whilst The Mirror-Eyed Gazer speaks only of beauty. All the Cagebirds have something to say, but none of the Cagebirds are listening. This play discusses what happens when communication breaks down, and whether freedom is being outside a cage or inside.

Set in the 1980s in post-industrial Doncaster, this dramatic play follows three very different women and their tales of Royce, a man who has a devastating effect on their lives in many different ways. Lynette, Ruby and Jodie are three very different women who are strangers to each other. Little do they know that one brutal man will bring their lives together. As we follow these three women through their daily struggles, they show us that even when they feel completely alone it is possible to find strength in the most unlikely of people.

An indulgent and atmospheric journey through the wild life of Edith Piaf. Traditional mime is twisted into a grotesque and highly inventive, physical exploration of the darker side of her road to fame. The audience is engulfed into an evocative world of shadowy Parisian brothels and bars, intensified by the sharp, stylized lighting and deceiving silhouettes. The raw beauty and opulence of her distinctive voice is harmonized by the incredible precision of the actors. My Voluntary Punishments - Another Cappadocia
|
My Voluntary Punishments is inspired and named after Annette Mesager’s work. This piece tries to recollect the small daily punishments of young urban women as experienced by each dancer. Another Cappadocia: in Brazil, there are thousands of beliefs that can be alternated or simply lived almost in harmony. A man on stage changes life with the delicate moment of death. The show talks about what must not be seen or touched. Intuition about something or someone who protect us. Angels perhaps? Its existence is not explained. It's a male solo.

A Rotten Little Story tells the murky tale of the secret sale by the British government of the paradise island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. In a storytelling style suitable for young teenagers and above, the play shows how, at the behest of the US government, Britain kidnapped the islanders during the 1960's and dumped them in the slums of Mauritius where many of them still struggle to survive. Directed by Dr Jim McCarthy, this is an exciting satirical show not to be missed!

Touching Stillness
|
Temenos Theatre explores shamanic soul retrieval as contemporary visionary performance. Dancers subtly weave a whirling spell to disentangle the mind from the trance of time, the illusion of incompleteness. ‘This is now. Now is all there is. Don’t wait for then, strike the spark, light the fire’ (Rumi). In this ecstasy of moving stillness the Beloved enters the dance. ‘Beautiful, thought provoking, a rare poise that draws you in utterly … a truly remarkable performer, graceful, measured and intense’ (ThreeWeeks), ‘Subtle understated beauty’ (BroadwayBaby.com). ‘A performer of integrity and grace’ (ThreeWeeks).
